After a Stressful Day at Work
Kindness isn’t only for others, we can, and should, show ourselves kindness also. One way we can do that is to take special care after a stressful and demanding day at work. There are simple and effective ways to do this. But you are the “you” expert; you are the only one that can determine what will work best for you.
It is crucial to create a clear separation between your professional and personal life. Switching off from work-related thoughts and tasks is essential to recharge and rejuvenate. This is especially important after a tough day. For many of us working from home, this can be more difficult. If you don’t have a commute from work to home, invent one. Turn off your computer, leave your area, change your clothes – even though you are not moving to a new physical location there are ways to “leave” your workplace behind for the day. These routines will help you automatically reset and detach from work.
Engaging in physical activity after work can help release built-up tension and boost your mood. Exercise doesn't have to mean hitting the gym, it can be as simple as taking a leisurely stroll, practicing yoga, following a workout video at home, or cranking up the music and dancing your heart out. Find an activity that resonates with you and energizes your body. Not only will it help relieve stress, but regular exercise has proven to have long-term physical and mental health benefits.
One of the most effective ways to unwind and show kindness to yourself after a stressful workday is by spending quality time with loved ones. Engage in meaningful conversations, share your experiences, and seek comfort and support from those who care about you. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive relationships can offer a much-needed sense of belonging and provide a fresh perspective on the challenges you face during the day.
Often, we are quick to judge and criticize ourselves. It is essential to practice self-compassion, especially when we've had a tough day at work. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Acknowledge the challenges you faced but also recognize your efforts and accomplishments. Remember, we all have off days, and being kind to yourself during these moments can make a significant difference in your overall outlook.
You are more than your job. Learn to prioritize your self-care. It will have a positive impact on both your personal and professional life.
